Origins

Rooted in Story has a story, and as you might expect--it's rooted in story! I'm Rachel Cochran, owner of RiS. I grew up in Iowa across from a wide hayfield full of roaming cows. Much of my childhood was spent behind a book. Everywhere I went, it seemed, one was in my hand. To me, they weren't just black and white old tomes. They were worlds to savor and explore! Maybe that love of books came from my affinity for making up stories, whether on the page or outside under the great oaks and bushy cherry trees in my yard. I wrote my way all through school and into college, where I earned a bachelor's in creative writing and a Master's degree Japanese literature.

After school, I roamed a bit—through Colorado, to Indiana, and back to Iowa. Along the way, I discovered what great joy there is in teaching others to write, working with them to put their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, values, and plain whatever they want to say into just the right words. It's a wonderful experience. Beyond fun; beyond rewarding. It calls to me.

I returned to Iowa in order to be closer to home and family. Both fortunately and unfortunately, I arrived at the right time--just as life and death came calling. Since then, new members were born into our family and others passed away.

In the days following, as my family reminisced about Grandma and Grandpa, and I kept up to date on my nephew, I realized that here was the best way to learn about and remember them—as they were. Not in the details of obituaries. Not in the names and dates of genealogical data. Not just in picturesno matter how cute. But in story. Our tales were full of first-hand detail, emotion, and “do you remember when...” We were creating vibrant pictures of our loved ones: what life was like for them, how they lived their lives, who they were and are as people, and how their experiences shaped their families.

That's how we remember Grandma and Grandpa. That's how we keep up with new babies. The same could be done for so many others—relatives from long ago, our recently departed loved ones, brand new daughters, nephews, and even ourselves.

That was the seed. And Rooted in Story quickly flowered into being with one purpose: to connect people and families with their past and future by preserving them in story so everyone can better understand their families and themselves. To do so, I help people create professional, well-designed books that chronicle family stories, biographical details, photos and visual artifacts, family recipes and heirlooms, and more—whatever creates that picture of family. Such books colorfully and completely preserve people, times, and experiences and then pass them on to future generations.

So that's my story. What's yours? I would love to hear them and help you make your own book. Check out the various format options to begin preserving your story.

Thanks so much for your interest in Rooted in Story.

"If you don't recount your family history, it will be lost. Honor your own stories and tell them too. The tales may not seem very important, but they are what binds families and makes each of us who we are." --Madeleine L'Engle
